Mathew Weatherstone is a Salt Lake City-ite who goes abroad to discover he as himself and as an artist. If it weren’t for his time-traveling, flashback interrupting, girlfriend stealing best friend, Beverly who keeps screwing up Matt’s past…and his future.
Originally performed in 2009 as a workshop at Western Wyoming College. The sly wit and heightened, surrealistic vernacular of Joshua Jon (The Suburbia Vagabond Heist, Music by James Irwin) incorporates performance poetry alongside the music of Taylor Williams and guitarist Steve Davis to create a one-of-a-kind musical finally making it’s way home to the Salt Lake theatre arena.
Tickets are $6.00 at the door. (Doors open 30 minutes prior to the show.)
Premiering July 28th and 29th at 7 PM

When I become famous, I’ll remember not to like you. Hersutah.com
People always talk about the person who inspired them for good. What about those dirtbags that changed our lives for the bad? Who’s that person you would happily give an ugly eulogy about? I want names. Mine goes by Rick Tallister. Not really, I changed it because I’m actually a nice lady beneath this thick, bitter skin. I’m sure someone reading this will post the real name, and maybe their thoughts.
This is a long story so stay with me. I’ll give the secret to youth at the end.
The indoor soccer place rescheduled a missed game, so I played last night. It was good times; my sister visiting from Texas played, her super patient husband also strapped on some shin guards for our co-ed team. The game was a blast. We lost. No cupcakes.
Afterwards, high off a goal and some spastic keeping skills, I started telling Brian about my soccer obsession as a kid. He had no idea my goal was to play for Team Dynasty: Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain and my personal favorite, Kristine Lilly. For the record, I never had their skill. Big dreams for a dumb kid. Then I played for Rick Tallister at Northridge High. He slowly slaughtered my love of the game. It’s his fault I’m fat.
Tallister came into a sticky situation for the start. Our original coaches were fired over politics, creating a fissure that would make any proctologist blush. The infighting was so intense some girls wouldn’t pass the ball to those on the other side. We ended the season 0 and 13, the perfect losing season. Which doesn’t get a lot of credit; it takes a lot of work to be a loser.
Tallister walked into the fire, but instead of putting it out, he poured gasoline on top, then danced around, slapping his bare chest. He wasn’t a bad guy, he was just an idiot. Tallister’s general demeanor made the team realize he didn’t want to be on the sidelines either. The dude had no skills when it came to dealing with a bunch of aggressive, hormonal girls. Looking back he was only like ten years older than us, what did he know? I’m around that age, and I don’t know much about life, other than what I see on Survivor. That is reality TV right?
I was 15 years-old, fresh out of junior high, figuring out my place in the dog-eat-dog, Mean Girls’ world. Tallister was the only teach I knew in high school. He was my gym teacher for three years in junior high. I liked him, he seemed really cool. Then, he taught me an important life lesson.
After a particularly horrendous game, he called us into the locker room for a ‘come to Jesus’. No structure, he just said to get it all out. Um, Tallister, NEVER tell girls to say exactly what they want to their enemy, it will get dirty. He also mandated that we all speak. It only took one player to spout off before all the girls were either bawling or glaring, arms folded. The talking stick finally came around to me. I just shrugged and said I wanted to play.
I finished speaking my piece… and Tallister laughed. He said, “Megan, I hated you so bad through junior high. Always asking me questions and you were just so annoying. But now I see that you’re a peacemaker and hold this team together.” (I wrote this in my journal that night, word for word.)
I was instantly mortified that my teacher told a room full of my peers, that he hated me. I didn’t even know who ‘me’ was and it was apparently disliked. After he made his backward compliment, my teammates laughed. I didn’t. I went home and cried to my mom. It was a melodramatic response, but it was also hurtful and embarrassing to have my coach disparage me at a very vulnerable moment. It was a pointless meeting to begin with, too many hurt feelings. Nothing was resolved and we kept on losing. Only now, everyone hated Tallister and each other. It was no longer about the game, but politics. I’ve proven time and again, I don’t know how to play that game.
It really isn’t Tallister’s fault I quit. I could have played on a comp team or even alone, but he literally beat the fun out of me. It’s scary how much power a teacher or coach can wield, many don’t realize the major effects they can have on students. This is why Dumbledore wouldn’t let He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named come back to Hogwarts. I won’t be judged; I love Harry Potter.
This is a rather negative post; I can name dozens of adults who inspired me in better ways, but it’s more fun to bag on people. I hope I can instill in Scarlett the ‘go screw yourself button’. Like the force, she must learn to use it appropriately. Oh, how I wish I had pushed it for Tallister. I guess this is my doing that. This, and getting back out there to play soccer and loving every second I’m on that field. I still ask a lot of questions, and Brian without hesitancy will support the idea that I’m annoying, but he loves me for anyway.
