In conjunction with the First Friday Art Stroll in downtown Ogden, Universe City will feature the 5th Annual Portraits of Ogden exhibit: “I Am Ogden,” a photograph book by Brian Nicholson opening the new exhibit Friday, Juy 3, 5:00-8:00 pm at 2556 Washington Blvd. in Ogden. The exhibit will run through July 18, Fridays, 5:00-8:00; Saturdays, from noon-8:00 pm. Private appointments to view the exhibit individually or as a group tour can be made by calling 458-8959.

Brian Nicholson was born in Ogden, Utah, grew up in Bountiful, and remembers the fascination of capturing his first photograph at the age of 10. That fascination eventually turned into a career in photography. After attending Weber State University and working as the photo editor of The Signpost, he began working at the Standard-Examiner as a staff photographer. During his seven years at the Standard-Examiner, he won numerous state wide and regional awards for his photojournalism, including a second place in the Photographer of the Year category at the Utah News Photographers Association and a first place in the Utah-Idaho-Spokane Associated Press yearly contest.

His work has been featured in several national publications such as the USA Today, Oxygen magazine and the New York Times. Last year, he taught a photography class at the University of Utah in the department of communication. His most recent project, a compilation of documentary portraits of the people of Ogden, was published in a 12×12 inch, 328 page art book entitled, “I AM OGDEN.” He currently works at the Deseret News and lives in Ogden with his wife, Amy and their four children, Sophie, Ian, Isaac and Katie.

a note from the artist about everything going on this Friday:
This Friday, July 3rd, marks the opening of the Universe City Gallery’s Annual “Portraits of Ogden” Art Show. I feel extremely lucky to be the featured artist. There will be close to 50 pieces in the gallery from the book, “I AM OGDEN.” I would be honored to see you all there. You may purchase the book at the gallery, or at a booth near Roosters on 25th. The Universe City gallery is located at 2556 Washington Blvd in Ogden and the show runs from 5:00-9:00pm. They are also for sale at Wisebird Bookery, Weber State Bookstore, Hastings, and Union Station Gift Shop.

Also that night, the Ogden Pioneer Days is unveiling the Trail to Pioneer Days Horse Exhibit, which features tons of horses painted by local artists. Last year was a sneak preview of what you will see this year. These artists have done an amazing job and seeing them unveiled will nothing short of spectacular. In fact, the photographs from the book, “I AM OGDEN” adorn one of the horses, which will be placed just barely west of Roosters Brewing Co. and Restaurant. Come check it out.

The Traces of the West Art Show at Union Station will kick of the evenings festivities at 5:00 pm. Then there will be a host of galleries displaying western art all along 25th Street and Washington Blvd.

There will be a photography exhibit at the Ogden Convention and Visitors Bureau at 2438 Washington Blvd. This show will feature life-long western photographers David Stoecklein and Erik Weber, as well as some pieces from members of the Utah News Photographers Association.

There is a lot going on and I hope to see you at one of these events.
